The injection of botulinum toxin A (BTA), which is more commonly known as Botox, has become very popular for reducing wrinkles and rejuvenating the aging face. The effects of BTA are only temporary lasting approximately 3 months, although longevity depends on environmental and physical factors of the individual. The injections can be done quickly, they require no recovery time and are not as complicated as many other cosmetic procedures for the face. A thorough consultation would be required before hand to ensure that there are no medical contraindications to you having the treatment.

Dermal fillers have been in use for many years.  They mainly consist of a collagen material made of synthetic or natural substances. They are used for injection in to the dermis of the skin, for the purpose of augmenting (enlarging) soft tissues. Dermal fillers have had a significant rise in their application for aesthetic reasons, namely to help correct skin conditions which develop as a result of ageing such as creases, folds and wrinkles.

The majority of dermal fillers available in the UK are made up of Hyaluronic acid (HA) and are temporary, or reabsorbed, and last around six to nine months. These are considered to be a very safe form of filler as the HA will be absorbed by the body during a gradual process in which any potential side-effects are short lasting. They are suitable to treat fine lines, volume loss and wrinkles, and they are also a popular choice of treatment for improving the lips.

Hyaluronic acid fillers are widely used in the United Kingdom due to their high levels of safety and reliability. It is a natural substance which can be found in every living organism. As a result it is biocompatible and side-effects are very rare. Around thirty million individuals have benefited from treatment with hyaluronic acid fillers. Products which use hyaluronic acid include Perlane, Restylane, Belotero, Teosyal and Juvéderm. Hyaluronic acid fillers come in varying levels of thickness and so they are a flexible option to improve different sections of the face. Thinner fillers are more suitable for wrinkles and fine lines, or enrichment of the lips, while thicker fillers are able to address very deep wrinkles and volume loss, lasting between six and twelve months. As with all treatments, a full consultation will be required to ensure that this particular treatment is suitable for you.

At Envogue Aesthetics we mainly use Teosyal, Belotero and Juvѐderm, however if there is a particular product (HA) that you have used in the past, prescribing this product can be arranged.

What are muscle relaxing/anti-ageing injections?

They are therapeutic muscle-relaxing agents derived from the bacterium clostridium botulinum, more commonly known as botox. Botox is produced in controlled lab conditions and administered in extremely small doses. It has been used in the USA and Europe since 1989 as a safe and effective treatment for such conditions as eye and muscle spasms. Since the 1990’s it has it has been shown to be an affective non-surgical treatment in very low doses for facial lines and wrinkles.

What is botox cosmetic treatment?

This treatment is suitable for anyone once the signs of ageing appear. It is a simple non-surgical procedure that smoothes the deep persistent facial lines that develop over time. Botox has been widely tested and has been approved for cosmetic use in both the USA and UK. In clinical trials over 90% of people surveyed rated the improvement as moderate to better. Clients can return to work as normal.

How does it work?

Botox works by blocking the transmission of nerve impulses to the injected muscles. Normally your brain sends electrical messages to your muscles so that they can contract and move. Botox works to block the release of Acetylcholine – which basically means the muscles does not receive the messages to contract. This means the muscle spasms stop or are greatly reduced.

How is it administered?

Botox is injected using a very fine needle into the overactive muscle. The muscle function becomes weakened, eliminating part or all of its function. Long standing wrinkles will soften and may eventually disappear.

Does it hurt?

Discomfort is minimal and very brief. Local anaesthetic cream can be used but is not normally needed. A very fine needle is used for the injections.

When does it start to work?

The effects of the injections may be seen after 2-3 days with a maximum benefit reached in 2 weeks. The end results may take up to 30 days to appear, particularly in men with strong facial muscles.

How long does the effect last?

Usually around 3-5 months, we suggest treatment every 3-4 months in the first year then every 6 months in the second year and possibly only every 9 months thereafter.

What are the cosmetic uses of botox?

Glabella frown lines (lines between the eyebrows), Orbital creases (crows feet), Frown lines (forehead).

Possible side effects of using botox:

All side effects are normally mild to moderate in nature. These can include, minor discomfort at the site of injection, slight headache, small amount of bruising, the area that has been treated can sometimes appear red or swollen.

What are the potential complications with botox?

Eyelid ptosis, brow ptosis, brow repositioning, diplopia. All these complications are rare and can be easily treated and corrected.

Is anyone exempt from treatment?

Patients who have infections at the proposed site of injection, patients with any known hypersensitivity to any ingredients in botox. Also generalised disorders of muscle activity (e.g. myasthenia gravis). Co-administration with aminoglycosides or other agents interfering with neuromuscular transmission. Also any bleeding disorders or anticoagulant therapy. This treatment is also not recommended if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to conceive.

What about aftercare?

There are a few things you need to be aware of to do or not to do. These include, not massaging the treated area, when the treated area is washed make sure you pat dry gently with a clean soft towel, do not rub the treated area for at least 48 hours. Also do not bend excessively or lie down for at least 4 hours, do not undertake any strenuous activity for at least 24 hours, do not fly on the same say. You need to exercise the treatment muscles by tensing and relaxing them for the first hour after the treatment, this will help the treatment process.

Follow up care with the therapist…

All treatments are followed up after 2 weeks. Personal 24-hour telephone number is given in case you have any concerns. A complimentary top up given if necessary.

Dermal fillers – where can they be used?

They can be used for a number of places to achieve different results, these include: lip contouring, lip augmentation, naso labial lines (between nose and mouth), marionette lines (corners of the mouth), frown lines and forehead lines.

LIP ENHANCEMENT

The  simplest  way to increase the size of the lips is with the injection of a Dermal Filler thereby increasing the size and improving the shape .Patients requesting lip augmentation usually want to simply add volume to their lips and  enhance their pout. The classic technique for doing this involves injecting filler into the border around the lip. We, however, prefer to inject into the Vermillion or red part of the lip, to create a more natural appearance.
